ANTARCTICA: Special Opportunities for Teachers and Students

Join Dr. Sam Bowser, Wadsworth Center research scientist, on his Antarctic expedition! From October through December, students may ask questions via e-mail, read ongoing journal entries from expedition members, and view current photos from the field. Conference on the Adirondacks

The 23rd annual WSWHE BOCES conference presents workshops on science, history, language and the arts as related to the NYS Learning Standards using the Adirondack area as a resource.

Join other teachers of all levels and subjects at Camp Chingachgook in workshops on Biology and Ecology of the Adirondacks, PCB contamination in the Hudson River, the Impact of Lake George on the work of Georgia O'Keefe and Alfred Steiglitz, and much more.

SPOTLIGHT ON CAPITAL REGION TEACHERS

Green Meadow Elementary School Home Page

Designed and funded as part of the Teacher Center's Innovative Grant Program, this web site was created by local teachers to make Character Education in their school more interactive. The web pages highlight the monthly theme with which students become involved. They emphasize ways to make the connection from school to home and community by enhancing and extending the theme presented in classrooms and at assemblies.

Writing History/Writing Fiction: A Virtual Conference

Developed by the History and Media Committee of the History Department at the University at Albany, this site provides a means of communication among and with local scholars who are writing historical fiction. It includes essays and samples by each author.

Crossroads

A K-16 American history curriculum developed by teachers from the Niskayuna school district and the Sage Colleges. The curriculum is chronologically organized into twelve historical periods--each covered by a unit at each of the three grade levels. The web site is published by ERIC.

Earth Science Labs

Web linked lab exercises designed and used by Teacher Center constituents. This exciting project is the result of a workshop sponsored by the Teacher Center in collaboration with Union College. Visit this site to see the creativity and energy of your colleagues.

Labs cover topics in the environment, minearology, geology, and weather. Any science teacher may participate and information is provided to submit your own labs.

This page is continuously updated to include new lab exercises developed by teachers. If you are a science educator in the capital region, you can submit your own labs and we will mount them on the page! This is your opportunity to join this innovative project.

Faculty Institute on Japan

This is the web site that accompanies the curriculum for a locally developed institute for secondary and college faculty in the humanities and social sciences who teach introductory general education courses that contain some instruction on Japan. It covers a broad range of cultural and historical material on Japan. This Institute is held at the Albany campus of the Sage Colleges in collaboration with Columbia University and funded by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

A non-profit agency providing the technologies and services needed to usher students into the 21st century. Located in Troy, NY.

NYWIRED
Located in Albany, NYWired offers an educational center where districts and teachers can learn about new classroom technology and seek help in developing plans for incorporating technology into their schools.

The Wadsworth Center
Located in Albany, it is the most comprehensive public health laboratory in the nation combining basic research and education in biomedical and environmental sciences. The Teacher Center is currently collaborating with Wadsworth on a number of projects including the upcoming local link to Antarctica and marine biology study.

NYS Early Childhood Career Development Initiative

The HUMOR Project, Inc.
Located in Saratoga Springs, the Humor Project helps people and organizations to tap the positive power of humor and creativity. They provide practical services, programs, and resources that improve the effectiveness and quality of life of individuals, groups, and organizations. GCRTC regularly co-sponsors teachers' attendance at their yearly conference.

GRANTS AND CONTESTS

Lesson Plan Design Contest

Select the best lesson in which you used the Web as a curriculum resource, and submit it by MAY 30, 1998. This contest aims to establish a collection of exemplary lessons which involve the use of web sites and engage students in communication, collaboration, information management, and/or publishing. The goal is to help teachers learn how to develp lessons which effectively utilize online education resources.
ELIGIBILITY: Any classroom teacher, librarian, or instructional staff member currently teaching in elementary or secondary schools. Lesson plans accepted in four divisions: grades K-3; 4-6; 7-9; and 10-12.
Prizes include, in addition to publication opportunities, International Society for Technology in Education membership, and a wide variety of software. Further info on prizes can be found at Prizes. For Questions and applications: Master Search Contest

E-Rate and other Technology Funds

New ways in which your districts can gain funds to support technology and telecommunications initiatives can be found in these web sites prepared by NYSCATE. They provide time-sensitive Telecommunications Act, e-rate, and Title III (Technology Literacy Grant Fund) information.

Internet Connections Grants

The National Research Center on English Learning & Achievement (CELA) and the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation are seeking proposals from teachers, especially groups of teachers, for funds that would be used to support student learning and teacher networking and that allow them to access the resources of the internet for themselves and their students.

Young Author's Magazine Internet Scholar Awards

This program focuses on educational application of Internet technologies, particularly opportunities for youths on the World Wide Web (WWW). It funds up to $1000 per exercise. Eligibility: Public, private and home school teachers. All interested parties must have an Internect connection and WWW browser. May enter as an individual teacher or in groups of four members. Applicants may receive awards for more than one exercise per funding period.

This program offers mini-grants for the development of Internet-based classroom exercises. Preference is given to those projects utilizing publicly available software and encourage the use of non-commercial WWW sites. Seven catergories of interest: arts and humanities, foreign language, language arts/creative writing/reading, mathematics, music, science and social studies. Contact: www.yam.regulus.com/yam.htm.
